Stranded—10 Days That Changed Our Lives
There are certain days, where we feel drawn in a certain direction. Maybe it’s fate playing her cards, maybe it’s some other spiritual force, we’ll never know. There will be no reason, no logical explanation, just an inexplicable urge to follow that road. This time, unknown to us, it would be a time we’d never forget. A time we’d learn so much of what it means to struggle. What it means to be stripped bare of everything we’re so falsely told we need in this life, and what it means to blindly and boldly trust, let go and fall into the safety net of Mother Nature.

Madeira
Madeira is a popular holiday destination. The Portuguese island offers a mixture of luxury villas, holiday complexes, and wild wilderness. As we flew into the airport it seemed like a maze of holiday houses, swimming pools, and restaurants... Not my cup of tea! We spent the first night in a villa in Canico. If luxury is your thing, this place would suit you perfectly. Palm trees and swimming pools adorned the whitewashed glass-sided pads. All sat proudly in a row overlooking the terquoise water. The interior was dotted with designer furniture and lighting. Each room with its own luxury bathroom, and the cherry on the cake was a large infinity pool overlooking the sea. Just a short walk up the road and we were spoilt for choice with five star resturaunts and top seafood menus. Classy bars and cafes. It was the perfect millionaire's paradise. As for us, we crave adventure! Not relaxation. So we caught the next bus into Funchal, the main city on the island.

Being a wild, free traveler isn't as simple as quitting your job, buying a van, and going! You need a way of generating an income, something that can stop your dream in its tracks. However there are hundreds of ways to generate money while travelling, and there is bound to be one that suits you!

What Can Go Wrong on a Road Trip?
Road trips are not without complications. You may be expecting to just jump in your wagon, hit the road, and have a smooth ride. However, this is rarely the case! Although some of the problems we have had have been pretty comical, some have set us back and cost us a chunk of our budget. We absolutely always carry basic tools with us. Spanners, sockets, screwdrivers, trolley jack to name a few. We would certainly recommend to anyone thinking of going on a road trip to do so too. We have even considered carrying with us some basic spare parts.

The Three Van-Dwellers
Having broken down again, we were feeling pretty worse for wear. We were pulled up at the side of a small country road, somewhere in the south of France. However that day, our bad luck seemed to be balanced with an equal amount of good luck. A small red car began to pull up, all faded and battered. It almost looked as if it had stories to tell. We dreaded it. We couldn’t speak a word of French, how are we going to explain our problem? The man stepped out and began to walk towards us. He had a rather daunting look about him, like a man who had seen a lot. The tattoos on his arms were faded and scared, the lines on his face told a story of his life but his eyes were bright. He had a certain kindness in his face. As he approached us he spoke, in a deep Scottish accent.

A Day in the Life of a Van-Dweller
We woke up somewhere in the south of France, surrounded by cork trees in our own little secret spot. An array of wild herbs filled the air with beautiful scents. Scents that awoke my senses as I slowly drifted out of a peaceful sleep. Coupled with the smell of fresh coffee, I couldn't think of anything sweeter. Just us, our little home van, and the wilderness.

Hill Farming - A Day in the Life of a Van-Dweller
We set off from the far south stretch of England, northbound to the rolling hills of the Peak District. We had a long drive ahead of us. We were leaving behind the rocky shoreline of Cornwall, to work and explore the beautiful landscape of Derbyshire.

The Ocean Is Important. How Important?
Without the ocean, we simply wouldn't survive! We ALL rely on it, even those who live miles away from the shore. The ocean covers nearly three-quarters of the earth's surface and holds 97% of the planet's water. Believe it or not, the ocean also generates more than half of the oxygen in the earth's atmosphere. Don't believe me? Let me explain. Phytoplankton are plants that live near the water’s surface and drift with the currents. These plants produce oxygen as a byproduct of photosynthesis, a process which converts carbon dioxide and sunlight into sugars the organism can use for energy. Put simply, they produce oxygen the same way that trees do. But on a much larger scale. Scientists believe that phytoplankton contribute to between 50 to 85 percent of the oxygen in Earth’s atmosphere. That's a lot.

Exploring the Forgotten Spanish Countryside
As we made our way up through the flat landscape, occasionally glimpsing the edge of a vineyard or orange grove. We had no idea where exactly we were heading. You see, to us it's not the destination that's important, it's the journey you take to get there.
