Supercars are a rare breed. They are powerful machines that can impress everyone from gearheads that love high horsepower to causal observers who enjoy high-end body design. Since they're supercars, they also are elite in nature—and therefore very rare to find on the streets.

For those lucky enough to afford a supercar, you might as well enjoy life in one of the best supercars on the market. Speaking as a lover of all things fast, here are my picks for the greatest of this year.

The McLaren 720S

We can't really have an article about the best supercars of recent years, including upcoming years, without mentioning a McLaren or two. They are known for having speed be their trademark statistic. For 2018, the McLaren 720S has become synonymous with speed, luxury, and prestige—and it's easy to see why.

Elegant and aerodynamic body design, combined with a 4.0-liter, twin turbo V8 engine capable of pulsing out 720BPS (710 horsepower) makes this a standout car in almost every category. As far as quenching that need for speed, the McLaren 720S also boasts a top speed of 212 miles per hour.

Currently, the 2018 version of the 720S is the first McLaren to have a full infotainment system come standard with the car.

The Ferrari 488 GTB

Ferrari has long had a reputation for making some of the best supercars and most powerful muscle cars on the market. That's why it's not surprising in the least bit that the Ferrari 488 GTB has become known as one of the top supercars of the year.

Turbocharged engine? Check. Seven gears that handle beautifully and great handling? Of course. A luxury body kit that you'd expect to see from Ferrari? You know it.

Six hundred and sixty horsepower, a leather race car-like interior, and more control than you ever thought possible is what makes the Ferrari 488 GTB a major upgrade over the old 458. What a beauty!

Lamborghini Huracan Performante

The 2018 Lamborghini Huracan Performante gives Ferrari and McLaren a run for its money in terms of its edgy, sporty appearance. This quarter-million dollar car is known for pumping out 620 horsepower, a massively powerful V10 engine, and for its grippy road handling.

If you love the idea of having a lot of power in your car, but worry about your car being a bit too strong for its steering, the Lamborghini Huracan Performante will definitely please. It's one of the best supercars on the market in terms of steering and handling.

On a random note, there's really no way to drive a Lambo without looking awesome in it. So, there's that benefit, too.

The Ferrari 812 Superfast

Admittedly, the name "Superfast" definitely gives away what this car was built for. It's meant to be one of the speediest cars issued out by Lamborghini—and trust me, the Ferrari 812 Superfast definitely does kill it on the race track.

The secret to the Superfast's super speed this year is a glorious 6.0-liter V12 engine that tops out at 789 horsepower, with a max speed of 212 miles per hour. Handling this wild beast is easy, thanks to Ferrari Slide Slip Control and a complete steering overhaul.

If you loved older incarnations of this Ferrari and love road-and-track cars, you'll definitely understand why this is one of the best supercars of recent years.

The McLaren Senna

Remember when we said that McLaren was known for making some of the fastest muscle cars in history? If not, we'll tell you right now that they are a company that's gained world fame for speed.

Clocking in at around $880,000 for a basic base car, the 2018 McLaren Senna is a beautiful work of engineering art that solves the war between sports cars and muscle cars, all by being one of the best supercars in the history of machinery.

This model comes with a V8 engine that pulses upwards of 780 horsepower and boasts incredible handling. The only issue? If you're looking for a road-ready car, you might find this one to be a bit over-the-top.

Porsche 911 GT3

Believe it or not, one of the most reliable sports cars on the market also happens to gain the title for being one of the best supercars on the market, too. We're talking, of course, about the Porsche 911's GT3 model.

Unlike other cars on this list, the Porsche 911 GT3 is ready for the road more than it is for the racetrack. However, that's not to say it's lacking in speed. The engine on this car is capable of delivering a serious punch of up to 490 horsepower, with a top speed of 199 miles per hour.

The Porsch 911 GT3 also comes with a ton of amenities and a great infotainment center. So, it works well for the millionaire who wants power and prestige, without sacrificing fun, too.

Pagani Huayra BC

Named after an Inca god, the Pagani Huayra BC is the kind of car that would make anyone feel like a deity. It looks slick as can be, and puts many Italian supercars to shame with its speed, power, and handling.

An 800 horsepower, twin turbo engine is combined with a light, highly aerodynamic build that almost flies on race tracks. In terms of sheer speed and power, the Pagani Huayra BC is one of the best supercars to be produced this year.

Porsche 918 Spyder

The Porsche 918 Spyder is truly a one-of-a-kind pick, and one of the best supercars to have a hybrid engine in history. This petrol-and-electric engined car has serious power, with a maximum horsepower rating of up to 875 BHP.

That's right—this is a legit hybrid car that not only proves that hybrids can pack a punch, but also can run circles around most of the other supercars on this list. Sure, it may cost way over half a million dollars, but as far as engineering feats alone go, nothing can quite beat a Spyder.

Aston Martin Valkyrie

Though I typically find most Aston Martin cars to be a bit snooty and old fashioned, the Aston Martin Valkyrie definitely is not part of that perception. This hyper-futuristic car is one of the most striking designs on this list and not just because of its body.

This road car is one of the only on this list to have a beefy V12 engine, and that's precisely why its theoretical output rests at 986 horsepower. The Valkyrie will slay race tracks and will undoubtedly make McLaren shake in its shoes.

Even if you don't like Aston Martin's typical fare, you have to admit that this is one of the best supercars you've ever seen.

Bugatti Chiron

If you thought a dozen cylinders was a major jaw-dropper, then you clearly have not seen the new 2018 Bugatti Chiron. This is one of the best supercars ever made in terms of horsepower, and actually broke the 1,400 horsepower mark on its basic model this year.

Its predecessor, the Bugatti Veyron, shattered records with a maximum speed of 267 miles per hour—and gained a rep for being the fastest production car in the world.

The new model, the Chiron, had to be electronically capped at 261 miles per hour. Theoretically, an uncapped Chiron can break 300 miles per hour.

W-16 engines will do that, I guess.

Koenigsegg Regera

The Koenigsegg Regera is one of the only cars that can rightfully claim it can hold a candle to the Bugatti Chiron in terms of horsepower. Both have engines that hover around the 1,400 horsepower mark and the Regera boasts a max speed of 249 miles per hour.

The name "Regera" actually translates into "to rule," and truthfully, the Koenigsegg Regera does that beautifully. The new 2018 model just pushed ahead of the Chiron with a 1,500 horsepower engine—alongside a breathtaking body and equally beautiful interior.
